What Word is Used in Vain (Writing prompt 13/08/24)

Daily writing prompt
What is a word you feel that too many people use?

At the college I work, overhead two students talking one was discussing last nights visit to the cinema, “and like, I was on the bus and this boy opposite was like, uh, I don’t know , like why don’t you say something, and all through the film he was like, it was so annoying.”
Her friend replies, “You should like just say no. Just like, grow up and go away”

Yep, interspersing every sentence with the word like, it means ,really what you are saying is it didn’t actually happen but if it did it would have happened this way. Like. But of course, it did happen, but inferring it was like this way or that, means it was possibly or should have turned out that way. It’s a word used in vain, it doesn’t actually mean anything in the context, it is said to impart some sort of vulnerability or lack of confidence in whoever is saying it. They are unsure? but actually they are sure because they can express it. It has become a word of folly and though we can blame Hollywood for teaching the generation to speak this way do we really wish to emulate airheaded and vain persons who live their lives behind a mask? Like… No !

Wot’s this all about then Guv’nor ?;-
The Random musings of a nobody. “Dagenham Dave”, is slang for someone one stop short of Barking (mad), though more contemporarily refers to any wayfaring and carefree person. Dagenham is a town to the eastern side of London (Luds Dominium) that was first recorded in a Barking charter in 666a.d. as the town of Daeccanham. Daecca is an ancient man’s name meaning ‘bright’ or ‘famous’ . Ham is short for Hamlet.
Dave is short for David, Hebrew for ‘Beloved’, My Surname ‘Wenborn’ derives from old English meaning of the Winding Stream.
