I listen to a lot of my peers, they reminisce about the old days and the music was better and the toys were more creative than passively playing an algorithm on the hypnotic computer, and we as kids were all over the place and had ‘a life’.
Would life be enjoyable if it was continuous and repetitive? Evolution, change and adapting are what makes life dynamic. Things change, we evolved, we changed our fashion, our tastes in music broadened, we enjoyed hitherto taboo foods, we progressed.
I don’t agree that music was better in the ‘old days’, I still buy albums, probably more having a better disposable income. I still go out to gigs and films and theatres, art galleries etc. I just don’t hang around on street corners any more in a gang trying to wonder if I’ll get a girlfriend.
But! I’m not that emotionless to not understand the hankering for the past…… The one thing that always gets me, that I wish would come back and that when I see a picture still makes me long for it again are old snapshots of Upton Park, the football ground of West Ham United, before they made us all sit down. The terraces were the best, we could choose where we wanted to stand, mingle with a group we liked, wander over somewhere else to speak to others, shout with others. It was community. I’ve never stepped foot in the new stadium West ham have acquired, seated ‘stands’ don’t do it for me. I’ll go to small clubs, outside the league so I can wander, talk, sing and be free !!
